Plane crash in Honduras leaves at least 6 dead
Release time:2025-03-19
At least six people died on Monday in the crash of a twin-engine plane belonging to the company Líneas Aéreas Nacionales de Honduras Sociedad Anónima (Lanhsa), which fell into the sea shortly after leaving the island of Roatan, in the Caribbean, with 17 people on board, an official source reported.
The governor of Roatan, Hugo Varela, told reporters that six deaths have been confirmed in the accident, which occurred after 6:00 p.m. local time.
The aircraft, as reported earlier by the deputy director of Civil Aeronautics, Jorge Corrales, had taken off bound for the Guillermo Anderson International Airport, in the city of La Ceiba, on the mainland, on the Honduran Caribbean coast.
A minute after taking off, the aircraft made a turn and fell into the sea, the federal official of that Central American country added.
Lifeguards from several institutions and volunteers are involved in the rescue work, which has been hampered by a lack of visibility.
About the exact number of people who were traveling in the aircraft there are two versions: one that there would be 15 passengers and the 2 pilots, according to the deputy director of Civil Aeronautics, and that of a police officer who indicated that there are 18 passengers, which would indicate an overload of the flight.
A fire department official told reporters that there were still eight people inside the plane.
