Trump considers saving TikTok; recognizes the popularity and usefulness of the platform
Release time:2025-01-18
The administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is exploring measures to prevent TikTok from ceasing to work in the United States, according to Mike Waltz, Florida representative and designated national security adviser.
Waltz explained in an interview with "Fox & Friends" that federal law that could ban TikTok starting Sunday allows for an extension, as long as there is a viable deal in the works.
During a previous interview, Waltz also noted that Trump is evaluating options to preserve TikTok, after reports surfaced about a potential executive order that would temporarily suspend the implementation of the law.
However, the justices seemed inclined to support the legislation, which requires ByteDance to sell TikTok on national security grounds or face a ban in the United States.
Waltz noted that Trump recognizes TikTok's popularity as a platform and its usefulness in delivering messages, but also emphasized his commitment to protecting U.S. user data.
"He is a negotiator and we are going to create a space for an agreement to be reached," said the advisor.
On the other hand, Pam Bondi, Trump's nominee for attorney general, avoided directly answering whether she would maintain the ban on TikTok during a Senate hearing.
This situation reflects the tensions between national security concerns and TikTok's popularity as a digital tool in the United States.
